International Driving Permit (IDP)

International Driving Permit (IDP)  allows people to drive a private motor vehicle in another nation when accompanied by a valid license from their home country. It will be proof that people have a valid driver’s license in their nation. It will be needed,  people to provide their IDP when they rent a car in a foreign country.

The Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC)  AAC is the only authorized body in Sri Lanka to issue the International Driving Permit In Sri Lanka.  You will need to have your international driving permit validated at the Automobile Association. It will cost you around 25 USD and they will issue you a local driving permit for the same validity as your IDP. Takes all of half an hour. The office is near the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo off main Galle Road.

Bring a copy of your:

1. A valid license from your home country
2. Hardcopy of Passport
3. Hardcopy of Visa
4. 2 passport size photos

For foreigners: come here to get a temporary Sri Lankan driving license. In order to get it, you will need your home country driving license (has to be in English or have an official translation), identity document, a picture for passport, and around 4,500.00 LKR which is around 20€ (. Can pay with cash and card. All process takes around 15-30 min.
